Reborn BMW 1 Series: The LCI Edit

Two million units later, the worldwide success of the 1 Series has been nothing short of expectation for the Bavarian premium car manufacturer. The latest edition of the smart hatchback comes in the form of the second generation life cycle impulse (LCI) model. Halfway through its model life, BMW have updated the 1 Series with cosmetic improvements to the exterior (much-needed according to some commentators) and a handful of specification upgrades to the cabin, in addition to new engines under the hood. Below I will walk you through some of these updates...

Traditional corona ring headlights set in a redesigned light cluster, are more geometrically flat and akin to the F22 2 Series Coupe...

Kidney Grilles less rounded than predecessor with more prominent grilles seen in previous model LCIs and on the newest members of the BMW family such as the 2 Series Active Tourer and X4...

The signature Hoffmeister kink and "glasshouse" driving position still resident on the 1 Series...

Flowing swedge lines emphasise dynamic mobility of the 1 Series and hint at the redesigned wraparound rear lights...

Beautifully redesigned light cluster with wraparound "L" shape, following suit with the rest of the range...

New rear apron coupled with double horizontal lines make rear look wider and more "squat"

Interior space largely the same but with enhanced optional extra's available including an 8-speed automatic transmission which uses navigation data for optimum shifting... trim lines include the new Advantage pack, Sport, Urban and M-Sport.

Technological highlights include increased power for M135i and the exciting 3-cylinder 1.5 litre petrol engine to replace the 4-pot 1.6 litre in the 116i, which should make this popular model more engaging for the driver as well as easier on fuel. To conclude this LCI should tick a lot of boxes both design and engine wise for those critical of the 1 Series and continue to drive the success of BMW's entry-level model for the next few years until the third generation follows.
